| Description | Fifth Beacon-hill of Gondor |
Min-Rimmon was the fifth of the seven Beacon-hills of Gondor, which ran west from Minas Tirith on the northern side of the White Mountains that looked down on the plains of Anórien.[1]
Description
Min-Rimmon was the highest peak in a group of crags known as the Rimmon. With Eilenach and Amon Dîn, Min-Rimmon was one of the oldest Beacon-hills, set in place before the foundation of Rohan.[2][3]
History
On the night of 7 March T.A. 3019,[4] Gandalf and Pippin, riding eastward on Shadowfax, saw the beacons being lit to call for aid from Rohan.[5]
On 12 March T.A. 3019, Théoden, on his way to Minas Tirith, camped his army of the Rohirrim under Min-Rimmon.[6]
After the defeat of Sauron, tidings of Aragorn's coronation were sent out to "all parts of Gondor, from Min-Rimmon even to Pinnath Gelin and the far coasts of the sea".[7] This would suggest that there was a settlement of some kind at Min-Rimmon, and that it marked the western boundary of Gondorian settlement in Anórien by the end of the Third Age.
Etymology
Min means "peak" in Sindarin, thus Min-Rimmon refers to the "Peak of the Rimmon".[3] "Rimmon" is a name of forgotten origin, coming from the Second Age before Gondor was established.[8]
Portrayal in adaptations
2015: The Lord of the Rings Online:
- Min-Rimmon sits above Ost Rimmon, a small but formidable Gondorian town. Because of this, its beacon is the best-maintained out of all the northern beacons.
