- 1916 – The 11th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers (in which J.R.R. Tolkien serves) is sent into action at the Somme front.
- 1931 - Robert Stephens, who would voice Aragorn in the radio series of The Lord of the Rings, is born.
- 1949 - Tolkien scholar and writer of various radio series Brian Sibley is born.
