- 1924 - J.R.R. Tolkien is appointed Professor of English Language at the University of Leeds.
- 1959 - Bob Joles, who would voice Gimli, Treebeard and Dáin Ironfoot in various EA video games, is born.
- 1964 - J.R.R. Tolkien writes letter 257.
- 1986 - Calum Gittins, the son of Philippa Boyens, who would play Haleth, son of Háma in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings, is born.
