- 1937 - J.R.R. Tolkien writes Letter 20 in which he says he "wrote the first chapter of a new story about Hobbits - 'A long-expected party'". This would later stay as the first chapter of The Fellowship of the Ring.
- 1939 - J.R.R. Tolkien writes Letter 37.
- 1956 - J.R.R. Tolkien writes a letter to Miss Stanley-Smith.
- 1962 - J.R.R. Tolkien writes Letter 243.
- 1964 - The eleventh episode of the Princess-serialization of The Hobbit is published.
