- 1917 – "Tea Cake" Barnsley is killed near Ypres while consolidating a captured prisoner. Barnsley was one of many of Tolkien's friends that died in the war.
- 1937 - Ian Hogg, who would voice Tom Bombadil in BBC's radio series of Tales from the Perilous Realm, is born.
- 1950 - J.R.R. Tolkien writes letter 128.
- 1959 - J.R.R. Tolkien serves the first Mass of Robert Murray.
- 1962 - J.R.R. Tolkien writes letter 240.
- 1969 - J.R.R. Tolkien writes a letter to Mr Burrows.
