- 1917 - J.R.R. Tolkien attends a medical board examination in Furness, and is found to be improving, but with pains in his knees and elbows.
- 1928 - Tolkien works on the latter part of Canto IV of Lay of Leithian.
- 1939 - J.R.R. Tolkien does the second day of his training with the top-secret Government Code and Cypher School (GCCS) at their London headquarters.
- 1956 - J.R.R. Tolkien writes a letter to Patricia Kirke.
- 1958 - Actor Stephen Ure is born.
- 1958 - J.R.R. Tolkien is invited by the Dutch publisher Het Spectrum to attend a "Hobbit Dinner" in Rotterdam. Tolkien is especially delighted by the "maggot soup" and the three barrels of tobacco he receives. Author Hella Haasse gives a speech.
- 1972 – At Buckingham Palace, J.R.R. Tolkien is appointed a CBE by Queen Elizabeth II.
- 1989 - Actor Lockwood West dies.
- 2005 - The parody book The Soddit is published.
