- 1912 - John Le Mesurier, who would voice Bilbo in the 1981 radio adaptation of The Lord of the Rings, is born.
- 1944 - J.R.R. Tolkien writes Letter 59.
- 1981 - The fifth episode of the radio adaptation of The Lord of the Rings is aired on BBC 4.
- 2001 - Brother Theodore, who played Gollum in Rankin/Bass' The Hobbit and The Return of the King, dies of pneumonia.
