Aldamir (Q: "Tree-jewel", pron. [ˈaldamir]; T.A. 1330[1] - T.A. 1540[2]) was the twenty-third King of Gondor (Castamir being counted the twenty-second).

History

Aldamir was the younger son of Eldacar but followed him as King due to the death of his brother Ornendil at the hands of Castamir the Usurper during the Kin-strife. Although Castamir later paid with his life for the killing of Ornendil, the sons of the Usurper successfully escaped and established an independent and hostile lordship in Umbar.

During his rule, kings of Harad who were in league with the Umbar rebelled against Gondor and Aldamir fell in battle against them.[3]

Aldamir's son Vinyarion succeeded him and in T.A. 1551, won vengeance for his father with a great victory in Harad,[4] after which he assumed the name of Hyarmendacil II.[3]

Etymology

Aldamir is Quenya, from alda meaning "tree", and mírë meaning "jewel".
