Andrath was the name given to a reach of the Greenway in the lands southward from Bree. For a stretch, the road ran through a narrow gorge between the Barrow-downs to the west, and the South Downs to the east. From this geography, no doubt, comes the name Andrath, which appears to mean "Long Street". According to some sources, it was at Andrath that the Lord of the Nazgûl encamped for a time during his search for the Shire and "Baggins".

The Andrath was a defile between the Barrow-downs (to the west) and the South Downs (to the east) in Eriador. Through this narrow way just south of Bree passed the North-South Road (Greenway).[1]

[edit] History

When the Black Riders came up the Greenway in search of the One Ring the Black Captain established a camp at Andrath. From there he sent some Riders out to patrol while he visited the Barrow-downs.[2]

[edit] Etymology

Andrath means "Long Climb",[1] apparently consisting of the Sindarin elements and + rath.[3]
