Arador (S, pron. [ˈarador]; T.A. 2820[1] - 2930,[2] died aged 110) was the fourteenth Chieftain of the Dúnedain.
History[edit | edit source]
Arador succeeded his father, Argonui, when he died in 2912.[3]
In his time many Dúnedain of the North lived in woods between the river Hoarwell and the river Loudwater. Arador lived in a house north of the Trollshaws in woods near the river Hoarwell, which was threatened by a group of Trolls.[4]
His rule was uneventful except for the fact that he was captured by Hill-trolls in the Coldfells north of Rivendell and killed by them.[5] He was succeeded by his young son, Arathorn II, in 2930.[6]
Etymology[edit | edit source]
Arador is a Sindarin name. Its meaning is not glossed, but Paul Strack suggests it means "Noble-lord" and is a compound of the prefix ar(a)- ("noble", "royal", "high") and the lenited form -dor of taur ("lord").[7] The Association Tolkiendil suggests it means "Royal Lord".[8]
