Aragost (T.A. 2431[1] - 2588[2], age 157) was the eighth Chieftain of the Dúnedain, succeeding his father, Arahad I, when he died in 2523.

History[edit | edit source]

Aragost's rule was uneventful due to the enemy's forces being concentrated against Gondor and Rhovanion. Aragost died in 2588 - after having ruled for 65 years - and was followed by his son, Aravorn.[2]

Etymology[edit | edit source]

Aragost is a Sindarin name. Its meaning is not glossed, but the Association Tolkiendil suggests it means "Royal Dread".[3] It is probably a compound of the prefix ar(a)- ("noble", "royal", "high") and gost ("dread", "terror").[4][3][5]
