Aran is the word for "king" or "chief" in Sindarin. Its plural form is erain.[1] In Quenya it was aran, as well.[2] The same root was shared by its Adûnaic cognate, ârû.[3] However, the seemingly unrelated Rohan tûrac was their word for "king."[4] A Westron cognate is not known.
