Aranuir (T.A. 2084[1] - 2247,[2] died aged 163) was the third of the Chieftains of the Dúnedain, following the death of his father, Arahael, in 2177.

History[edit | edit source]

As far as records go, Aranuir's rule was uneventful. Aranuir died in 2247, after having been chieftain for seventy years, and was followed by his son, Aravir.[2]

Etymology[edit | edit source]

Aranuir is a Sindarin name. Its meaning is not glossed, but the Association Tolkiendil suggests it means "Eternal King".[3] It is probably a compound of aran ("king", "lord", "chief", [lit.] high or noble person) and uir ("eternity").[4][3][5]
