Argonui (T.A. 2757[1] - 2912,[2] died aged 155) was the thirteenth Chieftain of the Dúnedain.

History

Argonui succeeded his father, Arathorn I, in 2848.[2]

Towards the end of his rule, in 2911, the Fell Winter began with the Brandywine freezing over. This was a catalyst for White Wolves invading Eriador from the North.[3]

In the last year of his reign, great floods devastated Enedwaith and Minhiriath leaving Tharbad ruined and deserted.[3]

Argonui died in 2912, after having ruled for 64 years, and was followed by his, son Arador.[2]

Etymology

Argonui's name is Sindarin and meaning "Valourious King" coming from the prefix ar- meaning "royal, king", and conui (from caun meaning valour, and ui an adjectival ending) becoming lenited to gonui meaning "valour". Conui can also be considered to mean "commanding".
