History
History
Artamir marched with his father to war with the Wainriders. Ondoher's force met with a surprise assault near the Morannon, where the King and Artamir were slain. It was later discovered that Artamir's younger brother Faramir had also ridden to war, against the laws and customs of Gondor, and had himself been lost in the battle, leaving Gondor without a King.
Prince Artamir was the son of the King of Gondor, and elder brother of Faramir and Fíriel. They were born during perilous years for Gondor. King Ondoher had been warned by Forthwini of Éothéod that the Wainriders were on the move. Indeed the realm was assaulted simultaneously from the East and the South.

Crisis
In 1944 Artamir and his father Ondoher were the two top leaders of the northern army of Gondor and led their forces into Ithilien in order to deploy upon the Dagorlad, expecting the enemy from the north or north-east.  Unfortunately the enemy not only came quicker than expected, but also directly from the east along the outskirts of the Ered Lithui. The army of Gondor was strung out when the vanguard was struck by a powerful force of mixed cavalry and chariot-borne warriors.  The King, Artamir, and most of the King's Guard were annihilated in the attack.
A political crisis ensued, in which Arvedui the northern King of Arthedain pressed a strong claim to the Crown of Gondor. Arvedui's claim was rejected by Steward Pelendur and the Council of Gondor, who instead gave the Kingship to Eärnil II, the victorious Captain who also belonged to the Royal House. Eärnil's line was short-lived, however, and ended with the presumed loss of his son Eärnur in Minas Morgul.
Aftermath
Artamir was the eldest son and heir of Ondoher, and with his death, the line of succession should move to close male relatives of the House of Anárion. However his younger brother Faramir was also slain (he secretly disguised himself to participate in the battle) as well as the King's sister-son, Minohtar and the throne of Gondor remained vacant.

Later events
His sister Fíriel was married to Arvedui, the northern King of Arthedain, and partly based on his marriage, he asked to be granted the throne. However, the  Steward Pelendur and the Council of Gondor selected general Eärnil, who had crushed the enemies in the Battle of the Camp and saved the realm, to be the next king.
The loss of Artamir was a turning point in the history of Middle-earth. Had he not perished, the line of Kings would almost certainly have survived the coming crisis and lasted into the third millennium of the Third Age. A thousand years later, Aragorn would have found Minas Tirith ruled not by a Steward but by a legitimate King, so preventing him from claiming the Crown himself. The unknown Wainrider who cut down Artamir, then, unknowingly paved the way for the reunification of Arnor and Gondor more than a thousand years later.

Artamir (Q: "noble jewel", pron. [ˈartamir], stem Artamír-; died T.A. 1944) was the elder son and heir of King Ondoher of Gondor.[1]

History

Prince Artamir was the son of the King of Gondor, and elder brother of Faramir and Fíriel. They were born during perilous years for Gondor. King Ondoher had been warned by Forthwini of Éothéod that the Wainriders were on the move. Indeed the realm was assaulted simultaneously from the East and the South.

In T.A. 1944 Artamir and his father Ondoher were the two top leaders of the northern army of Gondor and led their forces into Ithilien in order to deploy upon the Dagorlad, expecting the enemy from the north or north-east. Unfortunately the enemy not only came quicker than expected, but also directly from the east along the outskirts of the Ered Lithui. The army of Gondor was strung out when the vanguard was struck by a powerful force of mixed cavalry and chariot-borne warriors. The King, Artamir, and most of the King's Guard were annihilated in the attack.[2]

His sister Fíriel was married to Arvedui, the northern King of Arthedain, and partly based on his marriage, he asked to be granted the throne. However, the Steward Pelendur and the Council of Gondor selected general Eärnil, who had crushed the enemies in the Battle of the Camp and saved the realm, to be the next king.[1]
