Atanatar II (Q, pron. [aˈtanatar]; T.A. 977[1] – 1226, aged 249 years) succeeded his father Hyarmendacil I in T.A. 1149 and was the sixteenth King of Gondor. He was known as Atanatar II Alcarin ("Glorious"; pron. [ˈalkarin]).[2]
History
When his reign began Gondor had reached its greatest power and largest extent. Atanatar lived in ease and splendour, such that people said "precious stones are pebbles in Gondor for children to play with." However, due to the King's indolence nothing was done to maintain the power that his ancestors had built and the watch upon Mordor was neglected.[3]
