The deeds of Atanatar were not as "glorious" as his nickname would indicate. He made no effort to expand or maintain the power of his father and the guard on [[Mordor]] was neglected. Therefore his reign is seen as the start of [[Gondor]]'s decline before the [[War of the Ring]].

Atanatar II (Q, pron. [aˈtanatar]; T.A. 977[1]1226, aged 249 years) was the sixteenth King of Gondor. He was known as Atanatar II Alcarin ("Glorious"; pron. [ˈalkarin]).[2]

History

He succeeded his father Hyarmendacil I in T.A. 1149 when Gondor had reached its greatest power and largest extent. Atanatar lived in ease and splendour, such that people said "precious stones are pebbles in Gondor for children to play with." The King loved luxury and it was during his reign that the original Crown of Gondor was replaced by a jeweled helm.[3] However, due to the King's indolence nothing was done to maintain the power that his ancestors had built and the watch upon Mordor was neglected.[4]
