Atanatar II (Third Age 977 – 1226, aged 249 years) succeeded his father Hyarmendacil I in Third Age 1149 was the sixteenth King of Gondor. He was known as Atanatar II Alcarin (Alcarin means "Glorious"), for Gondor enjoyed its greatest wealth and power under him.

His wealth was so great that historians remarked that "precious stones are pebbles in Gondor for children to play with."

The deeds of Atanatar were not as "glorious" as his nickname would indicate. He made no effort to expand or maintain the power of his father and the guard on Mordor was neglected. Therefore his reign is seen as the start of Gondor's decline before the War of the Ring.

He was succeeded by his son Narmacil I in 1226.
