Ben loved Tolkien's books and greatly enjoyed being a member of The Tolkien Society; he had a Labrador named Sam and a cairn terrier called Frodo. Among his artistic endeavours, he contributed a cover picture for the Amon Hen journal. He also wrote poetry, some of which was published in a Quaker journal.
