Bifur was a companion to Bilbo Baggins and Thorin Oakenshield on the Quest of Erebor. He arrived at Bag End in the company of his brother Bombur, and cousin Bofur. He fought and survived the Battle of Five Armies. Bifur was a descendent of Dwarves of Khazad-dûm, but was not of Durin's line, which means that he was of either the house of the Firebeards or Broadbeams. Which most of the population of these two Houses dwelt for nearly all of the Second Age, and for nearly two thousand years of the Third Age in Khazad-dûm.

It is possible that Bifur fought in the Battle of Dale during the War of the Ring.

The name of Bifur originates in a medieval poet collection Edda and the list of dwarves in Völuspá, where it is written as Bívurr.
