Bifur was a companion to Bilbo Baggins and Thorin Oakenshield on the Quest of Erebor. He arrived at Bag End in the company of his cousins Bofur and Bombur. He fought and survived the Battle of Five Armies.

History

Bifur was a descendent of Dwarves of Khazad-dûm, but was not of Durin's line, which means that he was of either the house of the Firebeards or Broadbeams.

Etymology

The name of Bifur originates in a medieval poet collection Edda and the list of dwarves in Völuspá, where it is written as Bívurr. The name means either "Trembling" or "Beaver".

Other versions of the Legendarium

In Tolkien's unfinished rewrite of The Hobbit (published in The History of The Hobbit) Bifur, along with Bofur and Bombur, is said to be Thorin's attendant.
