Bob was a Hobbit of Bree.

History[edit | edit source]

Bob worked alongside Nob for Barliman Butterbur, primarily as an ostler in The Prancing Pony at the end of the Third Age.[1] Bob was the one who located the last pony left in Bree when all others has bolted following the Nazgul's attack. Later when Merry's ponies found their way back to Bree (thanks to Tom Bombadil) it was Bob who cared for them; he put them to work but treated them well.[2]

After the Ruffians entered Bree, Bob stopped working evenings, so that he could be home before nightfall.[3]

Portrayal in adaptations[edit | edit source]

2002: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (video game):

Bob is attacked by two ruffians and a hunting dog at the stables of the Prancing Pony. Aragorn saves him.

2007: The Lord of the Rings Online:

Bob has gone to a camp near the Barrow-downs looking for his daughter Lalia, leaving the Pony's stables to be tended by others for the time that the hero visits Bree.
