The fourth child of Farmer Tolman Cotton, Bowman was a younger brother of Rose Cotton, and so became Sam Gamgee's brother-in-law after Rose and Sam married. Bowman came of age - at the normal Hobbit age of thirty-three - in the year T.A. 3019, when the Shire was under the power of Sharkey's Men. With his father and brothers, Bowman was among the first to rise in rebellion against Sharkey and his ruffians.
