The fifth of [[Tolman Cotton]]'s five children, with whom [[Sam Gamgee]] played as a child in [[Bywater Pool]]. At the time of the [[Scouring of the Shire]] he was no more than thirty years old (considered a young and irresponsible age by [[Hobbits]], who did not come of age until thirty-three). When his father and brothers went to fight against [[Sharkey's Men]], Carl was left to protect his mother and his sister. Carl "Nibs" Cotton was the youngest child of Tolman Cotton.

Born in S.R. 1389,[1] Carl and his siblings spent much time in Bywater, and used to swim in the Bywater Pool with the Gamgee children often.[2] He had not yet come of age when the Ruffians entered the Shire, so his father ordered him to guard the house with a pitch fork while his father and brothers fought in the Battle of Bywater.[3]

Etymology[edit | edit source]

Carl was probably named after his ancestor, Carl, son of Cottar. The nickname "Nibs" has been a term of mock respect in historical English.[4]
