:The origin of the Castellans of Dol Guldur is not known. Sometimes they are said to be the spirits of those who were imprisoned in Sauron's dungeons, or that they were Elves and Men who sought knowledge and wisdom from the Dark Lord and fell under his sway. The Castellans were spirits like, though lesser in power than, the Nazgûl: formless and given shape by their cold steel armour. They were the captains of Dol Guldur and served Sauron with fierce loyalty. However, when Sauron returned to Mordor, there was no more room for the Castellans, so they stalked among the trees of Mirkwood.

"Nameless and with no will of their own, the Castellans of Dol Guldur are but one facet of that cursed tower’s sleepless malice. Formless, save for the armor that binds them, they stalk the paths about Dol Guldur, slaying those they find. Each fell to Sauron’s service in a different way; some sought to learn from him as an apprentice does from a master, others are the eternal remnants of one who has died in agony in Sauron’s dungeons. However they came into the Dark Lord’s service, they are all now bound to his curse and serve him absolutely."
