Category talk:Books by J.R.R. Tolkien

From Tolkien Gateway

The Category:Posthumous publications is already within the Category:Books by J.R.R. Tolkien. I suggest to remove this last category from articles of posthumous books instead of having them both, so books published in Tolkien's life can be seen properly. --LorenzoCB 11:45, 2 October 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The posthumous publications category probably needs renaming as there could be posthumous publications by other authors (e.g. Christopher), but I am not against books being in both categories, to be honest. I think it is useful to be able to see all Tolkien books together, which you can't if books are only in the posthumous category. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 12:15, 4 October 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
All postumous publications are (edited) by other people. I agree that a general overview is good. But maybe we could make a category for books published in Tolkien's life? That way the specific category for postumous publications will have more sense. --LorenzoCB 12:36, 6 October 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I do not see any extra value in distinguishing between books that mostly contain content that was written by J.R.R. Tolkien (and later lightly added by his son Christopher Tolkien) that were published during his lifetime and those that were published after his death. One needs to read the individual book to see whether they contain a disclosure of what was written or changed by the editor (e.g. by Christopher Tolkien). I found it useful to find out the sometimes estimated date when something was written (e.g. in The Peoples of Middle-Earth for parts of Unfinished Tales of NĂºmenor and Middle-earth). --Akhorahil 14:54, 6 October 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thats not the distintion I'm saying, but to highlight the books published during Tolkien's life. --LorenzoCB 15:20, 6 October 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]
