Ciryandil (Q, pron. [kiˈrʲandil]; T.A. 820[1] – 1015,[2] aged 195 years) was the fourteenth King of Gondor and the third of the Ship-kings.
History
He succeeded his father Eärnil I in 936[2] and continued Eärnil's naval policies. He spent much of his life defending the recently captured Haven of Umbar against the Black Númenóreans and the Haradrim.[3]
In T.A. 1015 he was slain in Haradwaith while Umbar was besieged[4] and was succeeded by his son Ciryaher, also known as Hyarmendacil I.[2]
Etymology
Ciryandil is Quenya for "Ship-friend", from cirya "ship" and -ndil "friend".
