Etymology

Clayhanger is an English placename, the name of three hamlets in England (one in West Midlands, one in Cheshire and one in Devon). It comes from OE clǣghangra, "Clavey wooded slope".[2] As a family name, it is best known from Arnold Burnett's Clayhanger novels published between 1910 and 1918. The name would likely be used for a family that resides on a clavey wooded slope.
