Eärnil I (T.A. 736[1] – 936,[2] aged 200 years) was the thirteenth King of Gondor and the second Ship-king.[3]
History[edit | edit source]
Eärnil was the son of Tarciryan, the brother of King Tarannon Falastur. He succeeded his uncle Tarannon Falastur, who died childless in T.A. 913.[4] He continued with the expansionist maritime policy of his predecessor by repairing the haven of Pelargir and building a great fleet. Eärnil besieged Umbar by land and by sea and conquered Umbar[5] in T.A. 933.[6] Umbar became a great haven and fortress of Gondor. Eärnil died together with many men in a great storm off Umbar, in which many ships sank.[5] He was succeeded by his son[7] Ciryandil.[8]
Etymology[edit | edit source]
Eärnil is a Quenya name. It is a shortened form of Eärendil.[9]
Genealogy[edit | edit source]
Other versions of the legendarium[edit | edit source]
In a late manuscript of what would later become Appendix A it is also mentioned that he fortified Umbar after he took it.[1]
