He succeeded his father Orodreth at his death in Third Age 2685. He rebuilt the White Tower in Minas Tirith, which afterwards carried his name.

Ecthelion had no children. He was followed by his cousin Egalmoth, the grandson of Orodreth's sister Morwen, at his death in 2698.
