Eithel Ivrin were springs that served as the source of the River Narog. They were located south Ered Wethrin on the northern borders of West Beleriand.[1] The springs directly fed into the nearby Pools of Ivrin and together these features were sometimes collectively referred to as Ivrin.[2]

History

The springs and pools were created by Ulmo, who guarded them from defilement.[3] Since the lands about were green and fair in Fo.A. 20 King Fingolfin held the Mereth Aderthad ("Feast of Reuniting") at the Eithel Ivrin.[4]

The springs marked the corner of the lands ruled by Turgon before he removed to Gondolin, which extended westward from this point.[2]

After Túrin had mistakenly slain his friend Beleg, Gwindor in Fo.A. 490[5] brought Túrin to the pools of Ivrin. There Túrin drank the water, which healed his madness and unloosened his tears. Sorrowing for his friend, Túrin composed the Laer Cú Beleg before he and Gwindor followed the Narog south to Nargothrond.[6]

Morgoth sent Glaurung the Dragon forth in the year 495.[7] When he came to the Eithel Ivrin he defiled their waters.[8] Later, under the spell of Glaurung, Túrin came to the springs but found their waters but a frozen mire.[9]
