Ekkaia (pron. [ekˈkaɪ.a]) was the Quenya name for the Encircling Sea or Outer Ocean that surrounded Arda.
The continent of Aman during the First Age had its west edges bordering Ekkaia. Beyond Ekkaia were the Walls of Night.
Ekkaia was completely refashioned during the Changing of the World.
Etymology
The name Ekkaia is not explained. The first element is understood as an assimilated et "out". The second element could be gaya, historical version of ear "sea" (*et-gaya); it could also be the word haya "far" (*et-khaya)[1]. Cf. eccaira "remote".
