Elfwine was the son of Éomer Éadig, King of Rohan, who inherited his father's kingship in Fo.A. 63. He was known as "the Fair" due to his parentage; his mother Lothíriel was of fair and noble birth herself.
Etymology
Elfwine means "Elf-friend" in Old English and is a translation of the Quenya name Elendil. Also, it is a reference to the earlier character of Tolkien's legendarium, Ælfwine of England.
