English Studies (December 1947) is an issue of the journal English Studies. The 'Notes and News' section includes the essay "'iþþlen' in Sawles Warde" by J.R.R. Tolkien and S.R.T.O. d'Ardenne (see pp. 168-170). The essay discusses a corrupted or misread word in printed editions of an early manuscript of the Middle English homily Sawles Warde.[1][2]

The essay was published separately as an offprint in paper wrappers in 1947, and the whole journal was reprinted in 1978.[2]
