Esgalduin was a major tributary of the Sirion, which rose in the dark heights of the Ered Gorgoroth, and flowed southwestward to meet the Sirion on the western borders of Doriath. It marked the boundary between the forests of Neldoreth and Region.

Etymology

In the Etymologies, the Ilkorin name Esgalduin is said to mean "River under Veil (of [?leaves])", consisting of the elements esgal ("screen, hiding, roof of leaves") + duin ("water, river").[1]

After his revision of Ilkorin, Tolkien continued to use the name Esgalduin,[2] although it is unknown if he intended the name to have been reconceptualized as Sindarin. Christopher Tolkien notes Esgalduin as containing the Elvish element esgal ("screen, hiding").[3]
