Ethring was a major crossing point, maybe even the only one, of River Ringló. It was located near the head of the Ringló Vale, some fifty miles beneath the sources of the river in the White Mountains. The mountain road from Erech to Linhir (and Pelargir beyond) went by Ethring, so Aragorn and the Shadow Host must surely have passed through the location during the War of the Ring.

The only reference to Ethring appears in the Map of Gondor in The Return of the King. Ethring is often thought to be a town, but strictly speaking in the markings of the map no town is indicated, only a ford similar to the Crossings of Erui or Entwade. It is however certainly logical that at such place there would have been some sort of settlement.

Ethring was a bridge[note 1] in Southern Gondor.

History

Ethring was a major crossing point of the river Ringló, along the main road from Erech to Pelargir.[1] Aragorn and the Oathbreakers crossed the river here during the War of the Ring.[2]

Etymology

The name Ethring perhaps comes from ath meaning "across" (cf. athrad "ford, crossing"). Ring translates to "cold" (cf. Ringló river, to which it probably refers).[3]

Portrayal in adaptations

2014: The Lord of the Rings Online:

Ethring was the only settlement in the Ringló Vale. During the War of the Ring, it was ruled by "Lord Borhador", who dwelt in the Crossing-Hall. Due to Borhador's old age, his son Dervorin led the soldiers of the Vale to Minas Tirith in his stead, and his other son "Arvaethor" assisted in protecting the Vale.

Footnotes

 1. The symbol used on the Map of Gondor suggests Ethring was only a bridge; there is no sign of a nearby town or settlement.
