Farin (Third Age 2560 – 2803, aged 243 years) was a Dwarf of Durin's folk. He was just 29 years old when his people were forced to flee the dragon-plagued Grey Mountains because his uncle King Dáin I and cousin Frór had been slain by a Cold-drake. Farin's father, Borin, joined Thrór when he rebuilt the Kingdom of Lonely Mountain in 2590. In 2770 the dragon Smaug assualted and sacked Lonely Mountain, driving its people into exile. Farin would have surely followed King Thráin II to Dunland, but he may have been too old to participate in the great war that began shortly thereafter, the War of the Dwarves and Orcs.

Farin was the father of Fundin and Gróin, and therefore an ancestor to both Balin of Thorin and Company and Gimli Elf-friend, one of the Fellowship of the Ring.
