The Fellowship of the Ring were the nine who set out from Rivendell on the Quest of Mount Doom, under the leadership of Gandalf, seeking to destroy Sauron's One Ring. They were also called the Company of the Ring and the Nine Walkers (in opposition of "The Nine" Ringwraiths who pursued them).
