Fortinbras Took II was the twenty-ninth Thain of the Shire.

History

Fortinbras was the son of Isumbras IV.[1] He married Lalia Clayhanger in S.R. 1314, and had one son, Ferumbras III, born two years later.[2]

Fortinbras became Thain after his father's death in S.R. 1339.[1] He was Thain for 41 years, and after his death in S.R. at the age of 102 he was succeeded as Thain by his son Ferumbras; however, in accordance with Took tradition, Lalia continued to be head of the family until her death in S.R. 1402.[2]

Etymology

Fortinbras is the name of two characters in Shakespeare's Hamlet. It is French for "strong in arms".[3]
