For many events in the [[Fourth Age]] only the year is known and that year is recorded according to the [[Shire Calendar]], in which the first day of the year was 2 Yule.<ref>{{App|Shire}}</ref>  In the reckoning [[Gondor]], Fourth Age years began on the first day of the month of [[Víressë]], which corresponded to [[25 March]] in the Shire Calendar.<ref>{{App|Calendars}}</ref>  Thus any event with only a [[Shire Reckoning]] year recorded may have occurred in the first 86 days of the year (2 Yule through 24 March) and thus belonged to the year before (by Gondorian reckoning).  Those events with only a Shire Reckoning year known (noted as "Within this Year") have the S.R. year shown in parentheses.  Since mayoral elections in [[the Shire]] occurred on Mid-year's Day ''after'' 25 March<ref>{{FR|Ordering}}</ref> Sam's re-election as mayor definitely fell in Fourth Age 14.

Fourth Age 13 (abbreviated to Fo.A. 13 or F.O.) is the 13th year of the Sun of the Fourth Age of Middle-earth. Unless otherwise stated, Tolkien Gateway follows Shire usage in Appendix B for reckoning Fourth Age years: Fourth Age 13 was also known as S.R. 1434 in Shire-reckoning.
