Galvorn was a dark meteoritic iron that was devised by Eöl from which he made resistant armour. Black and "shining like jet", it was hard as steel, but supple and malleable, proving resistant to all blades and darts.[1]

It's possible that galvorn was forgotten or lost with Eöl's death, and possibly also Maeglin's death,[1] as the metal was not mentioned in the Second and Third Ages of the world.[2]

Etymology[edit | edit source]

Galvorn is Sindarin for "shining black",[3] from gal ("light; shine, be bright") and morn ("black, dark; night").[4][3][5]

Other versions of the legendarium[edit | edit source]

The original name of galvorn was rodeöl, the metal of Eöl,[6], possibly comprised of raud ("metal") and Eöl.[3] J.R.R. Tolkien changed this name many times, to glindûr ("dark glance"),[7] targlîn, morlîn, back to glindûr, and then maeglin. Finally galvorn was chosen.[6]
