In 1985, Games Workshop introduced the MERP-system in the UK by publishing Middle-earth, The Role-playing Game set in J.R.R. Tolkien's World.

In 2001, Games Workshop introduced Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game, a miniature game based on Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings.
