Gammidgy was a hobbit family-name, apparently first used in 'Old Gammidgy', the nickname of Hob Gammidge of Tighfield. His son, Hobson, received the name in a slightly corrupted form. He became known as Roper Gamgee, and that form of the name that descended to his grandson Sam.
