Gimli (Third Age 2879 – Fourth Age 120, aged 262 years when he sailed into the West) was the son of Glóin and a member of the Fellowship of the Ring.

He was 62-years old when Thorin Oakenshield began the Quest of Erebor, but was considered "too young" to go on the quest with his father as a member of Thorin and Company.

He was apointed to the Fellowship of the Ring by Elrond, for he had come with his father to the Council to report the messenge from Mordor. During the ensuing quest he discovered Balin's tomb in Moria, and fought Orcs in the Chamber of Mazarbul, and can be credited as one of the few Dwarves who saw Durin's Bane and live. His good relationship with Frodo was shown in his invitation for him to come with him to see Kheled-zâram. In Lothlórien he submitted to being blindfolded under the condition that Legolas, the elf in the company, was also. But his heart softened upon meeting the Lady Galadriel, from whom he requested three strands of her golden hair, and from whom he recieved them with her blessing.

After the Breaking of the Fellowship at Parth Galen, he hunted Orcs across Rohan with Aragorn and Legolas. He fought at the Battle of the Hornburg, there in a contest with Legolas killing forty-two Orcs, beating his opponent by one. He fought bravely at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, and also at the Battle of the Morannon.

After the the War of the Ring, he brought many Dwarves from Erebor to the Glittering Caves to start a colony, and made his home there. He was called "Lord of the Glittering Caves".

Gimli was famed for his long friendship with Legolas; It is said that they sailed into the West together. Gimli was the first and only Dwarf to go to the Undying Lands.

Portrayal in Adaptations
