Halfast "Hal" Gamgee was a Hobbit of the Shire.

History[edit | edit source]

Halfast was the son of Halfred, an uncle of Samwise Gamgee.[1] He worked for Mr. Boffin in Overhill, and often went up in the Northfarthing to hunt.

He had the reputation for his wild stories of things he saw. He reportedly encountered a "Tree-man" while hunting beyond the North Moors.

Sam mentioned this gossip to Ted Sandyman while discussing the queer news heard in the Shire around T.A. 3018.[2]

Etymology[edit | edit source]

The name likely comes from Old English hālfæst meaning "hale and firm".[3]

Portrayal in adaptations[edit | edit source]

2007: The Lord of the Rings Online:

Hal Gamgee lives in the town of Oatbarton in the Northfarthing of the Shire, which in-game is located within Evendim region.
