Haudh in Gwanûr was the burial mound of Folcred and Fastred, erected at their death in T.A. 2885[1] upon the shore of the river Poros.
History
Folcred and Fastred, the twin sons of King Folcwine of Rohan, had come South to answer the Oath of Eorl. They fought the Haradrim alongside the Gondorians, but were slain near the Crossings of Poros in Ithilien.[2][3]
The Rohirrim put them to rest according to their fashion. The mound was raised high upon the shore of the river. It is said that the enemies of Gondor were afraid to pass the tomb.[3]
Etymology
It has been suggested that Haudh in Gwanûr means "mound of the brothers" in Sindarin, consisting of haudh ("mound, grave, tomb") + in (pl. genitive article) + gwanûr.[4] In editions of The Lord of the Rings prior to the 2004 edition, the circumflex (^) was omitted.[5]
Portrayal in adaptations
1995-8: Middle-earth Collectible Card Game:
- Haudh-in-Gwanûr is a card, where players face an attack by the undead. Harondor is written on the right hand side below the bottom of the drawing of Haudh-in-Gwanûr.
1987-96: Middle-earth Role Playing:
- The Sea-Lords of Gondor - Pelargir and Lebennin campaign module contains a detailed map that includes Ithilien. This map shows that Haudh-in-Gwanûr is on the north bank of the river Poros.
- In Southern Gondor: The Land it is mentioned that Haudh-in-Gwanur is on the north bank of the river Poros at Athrad Poros and that the river Poros forms the border between Harondor and Ithilien. As a consequence, Haudh-in-Gwanur is probably in Ithilien rather than in Harondor. In addition, it is mentioned that orcs from Mordor cast down the tall stone that crowned the mound in T.A. 2954 and that Princess Eowyn of Ithilien caused the standing stone of Haudh-in-Gwanur to be restored soon after the War of the Ring.
- In Southern Gondor: The People it is mentioned that the men of Amrûn cast down the standing stone of Haudh-in-Gwanur at Athrad Poros in the year T.A. 2954.
