Hayward was the surname of at least one Hobbit, Hob Hayward.[1]

[edit] Etymology

The word is derived from hay 'fence' + ward 'guard'.

The English word refers to a local official with the duty of inspecting fences and keeping cattle from straying, and survives in the very common real-life surname Hayward.[2]
