Helluin was the name in Middle-earth for the star known today as Sirius, the "Dog Star". It was part of Telumehtar, the name the Elves gave to the constellation Orion.[1][2]
Etymology[edit | edit source]
The second element in Helluin is most probably Quenya luinë ("blue").[3]
It's possible that the first element refers to "ice" (see: Helcar) in which case the name means "ice-blue".[4]
Other versions of the legendarium[edit | edit source]
In the earliest version of the legendarium in The Book of Lost Tales, the star was called Nielluin ("Azure Bee" or "Blue Bee") in Qenya.[5] Another Qenya variants were Nierninwa and Niellúnë, and its Gnomish name was Niothluimi.[6]
