Hendor was a servant of Idril according to the early version of the legendarium in The Book of Lost Tales.

History[edit | edit source]

He was a house-carl of Idril in Gondolin, and was aged.[1] When the Fall of Gondolin began, Idril sent most men of her guard down the secret way with young Eärendel.[2]:187 Hendor had to carry the child down the tunnel, and while crossing Tumladin these men were persecuted by Orcs upon wolves. However, they were saved by Tuor and Hendor was relieved of his burden, although Eärendel claimed he didn't need to be beared.[2]:190

Etymology[edit | edit source]

Hendor is never glossed, but it could be related with Gnomish/Qenya hen ("eye").[3]
