Humphrey William Bouverie Carpenter (29 April 1946 – 4 January 2005) wrote the authorised biography of J.R.R. Tolkien published by Allen and Unwin in 1977, and helped edit The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, published in 1981. He died at the young age of 58 from heart failure.
